The Cruda Series is something that began before Ana Bravo even really started painting. When She first became interested in Art she used to browse through all the art books at the library and the stuff that called out to her the most in the beginning was Cuban poster art from the 1960s and 70s. She thought it was really beautiful with the bright, bold colors and simple text. visually, it really appealed to her. She didn't know how to silkscreen at the time so she tried to duplicate that style by painting it. She can't pinpoint when sheI first heard about pink elephants…but when Bravo found out that cartoon characters would hallucinate them when they were intoxicated she just knew she wanted to paint them. Bravo always found it amusing that they called a hangover "la cruda" in Spanish. so she just put the two together and painted a little bit of her reality. in art school, her mentor would tell her not to paint flat…it used to really annoy her, but Bravo figured she should probably learn how to paint and draw a proper figure. that's when she started doing all the portraits. while she was in school they used to always tell her to go to the MOMA in SF and write about the work there. Ana Bravo remembers being blown away by this huge paining by Takashi Murakami. and guess what? it was bright pink and completely flat! and since the elephants always seemed to creep back into her work… she decided she would dedicate a show to them and just have fun with painting again…and hopefully get them out of her system…

I spent the last three years visiting Dominican beauty salons and barbershops in New York’s Washington Heights and in the Dominican Republic. I have spent this time documenting men, women and children of all ages as they transform themselves with hair-straightening tools, chemicals, fades, and braids. These beauty-altering institutions are my main subjects in my body of work because of the role they’ve played in helping me discover issues with perceived beauty and identity. I am fascinated by the power hair has in expressing, celebrating and simultaneously, surpressing ones heritage.

WHAT IS THE 2008 MURAL TOUR?
In the summer of 2006, we traveled throughout Mexico and Central America and collaborated with local organizations to successfully produce eleven original murals in two months. We invite you to check out the murals from the 2006 Mexico-Central America Tour at www.myspace.com/trustyourhustle. The North American Mural Tour will start in Brooklyn, NY June 2008, work its way to Canada and across the United States to end in the San Francisco Bay Area August 2008. In collaboration with local artists, cultural centers, grassroots

when i first entered the exhibition (thank you brandhi), i didn't know what to expect. i heard people talk about how intense it was and how loud kara was with her images and words. i heard about kara's work through friends and have never seen her stuff till this exhibition and i was honestly impressed and disappointed at the same time. i appreciated her candid approach to race, sex and power! i was thinking about how times have not changed, what was going on back then clearly is still going on now, just subtle. i was disappointed with the auidence....

While Tony Peralta, with his dark complexion, sculpted goatee, and close shaven head, bares no physical resemblance to the blonde-haired, flamboyant pop artist Andy Warhol, the emerging artist shares many similarities with the Prince of Pop. Both men were raised by immigrant parents, in Peralta's case by a Dominican mother in Washington Heights.
